The library is located in the east wing of the Srader Center. A comfortable reading area is provided with a view of downtown Smith Center. In addition to adult, junior & young adult areas, separate rooms offer genealogical resources and the library's extensive Kansas Collection. A small courtyard is available as a place to read, relax or eat lunch. Library events are held there and clubs may make arrangements to use this beautiful outdoor area.

GENEALOGY RESEARCH

The Sarah Steward Chapter of the DAR and the library staff have collected and organized many sources pertaining to local history. Genealogists are welcome to spend time searching this extensive collection. A photocopier is available for public use.

Any long-distance requests for genealogy information should be accompanied by:

The library staff will do "simple" searching as time allows. Any requests that will require extensive research will be passed on to local genealogists and may then require a fee set by that person.

The Kansas Collection includes many books on Kansas history, wildlife, plants, biographies and other subjects.

ROTATING COLLECTION

The Central Kansas Library System in Great Bend provides the Rotating Collection. Approximately every eight weeks, the staff chooses new items for children and adults. These materials are on temporary loan until the book van returns with other choices.

HOSPICE LIBRARY

The library houses the resource collection belonging to the Smith County Hospice. Many books are available to families of terminal patients. The collection may be searched by typing in the term "Hospice" in the online catalog for the Smith Center Public Library.

"ADOPT-A-MAGAZINE" PROGRAM

September is the month the public is invited to "Adopt-a-Magazine." Donors can choose to pay for one-year subscriptions to magazines from the library's selected list. At the beginning of the next year the magazines shelves will be labeled with the donor's name. "Adoptions" can be made in honor of a special person or in memory of a loved one. Contact the library for more details.

"MINDS ON" WRITING WORKSHOPS

Each year during October, the library is the host site for several writing workshops for students grades 6-8. The workshops are part of the "Minds On" program sponsored by the Rensselaerville Institute. Groups of students from north-central Kansas and south-central Nebraska spend a day at the library learning how to write more creatively.

Story Hour for Preschoolers is in session during the school year. The Smith Center High School Parenting Class leads the program. Any 3, 4 or 5-year old who is not yet in school is eligible to attend.

A parent (or a legal guardian) needs to fill out two simple forms in order to enroll the child.

Story Hour meets on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.
